THIS IS VERSION 2 RELEASED 11-28-2017 OUR NEW BACKUP CAMERA KITS HAVE BEEN IMPROVED IN MANY WAYS.
IMPORTANT PLEASE READ OUR ENTIRE DESCRIPTION BELOW. PLEASE REVIEW OUR VIDEOS AND REMEMBER TO DOWNLOAD THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS.
INFORMATION UPDATED AS OF FEBRUARY 20TH 2018
Before purchasing this Camera Kit you must verify your pcm software version. with the ignition “ON” you must press the SOURCE & INFO button on your PCM 3.1 Radio and make sure that your software version is 4.3 and up. If it isn’t please don’t purchase this kit. (Read our FAQ’s below for more information on what to do if your version is below 4.3).
ONCE THE CAMERA KIT HAS BEEN INSTALLED THE PCM 3.1 RADIO WILL NEED TO BE CODED, THIS CAN BE DONE BEFORE OR AFTER THE INSTALLATION. THERE ARE 2 WAYS TO GET THIS DONE.
1- VISIT YOUR PREFERRED PORSCHE DEALER OR INDY SHOP THAT IS EQUIPPED WITH A PORSCHE "PIWIS" SCANNER TO CODE THE BACKUP CAMERA.
2- ***NEW*** WE CAN SUPPLY YOU WITH A SELF CODING OBDII TOOL, THIS CAN BE DONE VIRTUALLY BY ANYONE NO TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE IS REQUIRED. AN ADDITIONAL FEE IS CHARGED FOR THIS SERVICE AND A DEPOSIT FEE WILL ALSO BE CHARGED UNTIL THE TOOL IS RETURNED TO US. YOU MAY HAVE TO WAIT A FEW DAYS OR UP TO 2 WEEKS BEFORE YOUR ORDER SHIPS, WE CURRENTLY HAVE A VERY LIMITED AMOUNT OF THE SELF CODING TOOL.
Please watch video below which explains how this kit works and installation process.
This is by far one of the coolest gadget available for your Porsche that is very close to the factory Porsche Backup Camera. For what it costs you will rip the benefits of having a Backup Camera for as long as you own your Porsche. Installation is easy, quality is exceptional, it’s almost a PLUG N PLAY if it wasn’t for the coding that needs to be performed.
The quality of the image is superior to many OEM Cameras out there, we have the opportunity to work on many exotics at Maxspeed in our service center, and the camera resolution with the PCM 3.1 screen is an almost perfect marriage, the image is CLEAR.
This camera kit will integrate into your PCM and you will have the option to access camera settings via your PCM 3.1 by pressing the “CAR” button followed by the “OPTION” button to access backup camera settings. So this kit is just like having the original minus the grid lines that curve while turning the steering.
Our Backup Camera installs in place of the factory license plate light housing (Right Side “Passenger side”) and has led lights integrated so you retain your lighting for the license plate.
Our latest version (Version 2) is the same great camera has our previous version but with lots of improvements when it comes to installation. Our newest kit includes the following improvements
NEW KIT (VERSION 2)
Now includes a pre-wired adapter for PCM 3.1 with pre-wired Backup Camera Module. In other words, there’s no more splicing into the factory PCM harness. (Our original kits required splicing into the factory harness by way of soldering)
The Backup Camera has integrated Led Lighting for your license plate, it now comes with the connector to connect it directly to the factory license plate light harness connector, this eliminates splicing into the factory wiring harness. (Our original kits required splicing into the factory harness by way of soldering)
The signal wire for the Backup Camera is now pre-wired, you don’t have to purchase electrical wiring any longer to complete the installation. (Our original kits required for you or your installer to supply some electrical wiring to complete the installation and soldering wires was required as well)
Our kits now include compatibility for the Cayenne and Panamera , the pictures show the backup camera for the Boxster/Cayman/Carrera. The Panamera/Cayenne Camera is very similar in looks.
Kit includes the following
- Backup Camera mounted on License Plate housing with built in Led Lights
- Electrical wiring Adapter for PCM 3.1 with integrated backup camera module
- Electrical wiring harness from PCM 3.1 to Backup Camera
- Image Sensor: ¼” Color Sensor
- Waterproof rating: IP67
- Lens Angle: 170 Degrees
- Resolution: 420TV Lines
- Effective Pixels: 580 x 540
- Night Vision
Q-You mention that you now offer a self coding tool hoe does that work?
A- Its very simple and takes approx 1 to 10 minutes to code, an instruction sheet will be provided with the tool, all you have to do is plug it to the OBDII port of the car, press a button and let it do it's magic, yes it's that simple.
Q-What is the additional cost for the self coding OBDII tool?
A-You will be charged a $65 Fee (Includes Pre-Paid Return Label) to use our tool + a $150 Deposit until we get the tool back, that's way better than what the dealer normally charges approx. 150.00. The Deposit will be returned to you once you send us back the tool, a pre-paid return label and packaging will be included for you to return it to us for your convenience. So your total will be $299.95 + $65.00 + $150.00 = $514.95 , once you return the tool to us you will get $150 back so in reality the cost is $314.95 for the camera kit + $50.00 tool rental fee = $364.95
Q- I have a 2012, 2013 Boxster, Cayman, Panamera, Cayenne, 911 and my software version is below 4.3, what can I do?
A- If your PCM Version is below 4.3 you wont be able to enable the reverse camera in the PCM, we have tried many different ways to try and make it work and we were not successful. We contacted a few Porsche Dealers and they have confirmed that it's not possible to do so, however according to a Forum Post we found online it looks like there is a possibility to have your software updated to the latest version. According this POST on rennline it looks like its a possibility. But again we have yet to see this happen
So if the version of your PCM is below 4.3 its not possible to install this kit,at this time the only option is to purchase a used PCM that has version 4.3 and up, however that's another story special codes from Porsche are necessary to activate the PCM.
Q- Will the backup camera work with Manual Transmission?
Q- Can I have the PCM coded after the installation
A- Yes you can install the backup camera kit and code it after, it doesn't matter if you code it before or after.
Q- I don’t see the Source and Info button on my radio?
A-You have a CDR Radio and not a PCM. We have explored that option with a customer and had him go to a shop to see if it was possible to enable the backup camera by way of coding and it wasn’t possible. So if you have a CDR Radio as far as the information we have its not possible to install our kit. You may have to explore other options available on the market.
Q-What is the difference between your kit and other kits like NAV-TV?
A-We didn’t explore all of the options available from other sources however one thing is for sure our kit cost way less, our goal is to provide you with a solution for integrating a Backup Camera to your Porsche with the least effort and complications possible and make it look and feel OEM as much as possible. We don’t care about playing a DVD while your driving like other kits may provide so if your goal is to have a Backup Camera that works perfectly look no further.
Q-Will the grid lines or guide lines curve or turn while I turn my steering wheel?
A-No normally that function is connected to the steering wheel electronics, as far as we know its currently not possible to have the grid lines follow your steering wheel. The lines will be centered and aligned at all times.
Q- How long should it take to install this kit?
A- Depending on the installers experience it can vary from 2 to 4 hours, however it is completely normal to get a 3 to 4 Hour labor charge.
Q-Can you install my Backup Camera Kit?
A-Yes if you happen to live a couple minutes away, or a few hours away It will be our pleasure to install it for you. Installation costs including coding for our customers is anywhere from $150.00 to $225.00. Call us to schedule an appointment.
Q-Since the camera will be offset will that affect accuracy?
A-The camera will be offset from the center of the car by 3 inches, which means that when seeing objects keep in mind that you are offset by 3 inches. This is because the backup camera is installed in the license plate light position, this avoids cutting or modifying your bumper.
Q-Can I install this myself?
A-Yes of course its possible difficulty level is 4/10 but time consuming.
Q-Will I get the grid lines like the factory PCM 3.1 Camera?
A-Yes this kit uses the same functions like if it came from factory however the grid lines will not follow the steering wheel as you turn.
Q-I have the parking sensors, will this work and what happens on reverse do I still see the parking sensor display?
A-Yes it will work, and your display will overlap the backup camera image, so you get a combination of both on your screen.
Q-Will you include installation instructions?
A-Yes we will send you a PDF File with installation Instructions. You can also refer to the video below.
