porsche  PCM 3.1  backup  camera  kit

This is by far the best Backup Camera Kit available for your Porsche 981/991 on the market today.

This kit will integrate with the factory Porsche PCM 3.1 Radio.

The PCM 3.1 Radio is found on the following models.

2013-2016 Porsche Boxster (All variants)
2014 to 2016 Porsche Cayman (All Variants)
2012.5 to 2016 Porsche Carrera 991 (All Variants)

This Backup Camera Kit is the closest you will get when compared to a factory original Backup Camera  found on some Porsche Models up to 2016 such as the Cayenne, Panamera , Macan and some 2016 Carrera 911. The Backup Camera Kit will allow you to access the Camera menu on the PCM once coded just like a factory one, that is why this is the  best Backup Camera kit you can get. A quality product and almost a 100% plug n play solution.

All of our kits include all the necessary items to complete the installation. This includes

1- The Backup Camera
2- The Video/Power Cable
3- PCM Harness with emulator
4- Voltage Rectifier Power Box
5- All the other bits and pieces to complete the installation

NOT INCLUDED The PCM 3.1 will need to be coded to accept the Backup Camera, there are several ways to code the PCM (Explained further below) however the best solution and most convenient and headache free solution is to rent out coding tool. Rental Fee and Security Deposit applies. Please see our FAQ's below for more info.

A Bit Of History

We have been selling these kits for years, of course with the years this kit got better and better just like any other technology our kits evolve as well.

The kits offered are our latest release from November 2020.

By reading further below and watching the videos you will get a good understanding about this product, and the information below should answer all of your questions as well.  Before calling or texting for basic information please take thew time to read and watch the videos its all there. Of course you are welcomed to call or text we will be happy to answer any questions or converns you may have.

Before continuing any further or before placing an order it is very important for you to watch all the videos and read all the information below. You need to make sure this Backup Camera kit is compatible with your vehicle.  Please follow the steps below.

****************IMPORTANT*****************

STEP #1  MAKE  SURE  YOU  HAVE  A  PCM3.1   RADIO

The first step is to make sure that your Porsche is equipped with a PCM 3.1 and not a CDR 31 Radio Porsche used a PCM 3.1 and a CDR 31 Radio depending on the options that were chosen when the vehicle was originally purchased.

If your Radio has the SOURCE button you have a PCM 3.1 if your Radio has a TP button you have a CDR radio. Both the SOURCE and TP button are located on the Left Side and are the first buttons.

If you have a CDR 31 Radio unfortunately it is not possible to integrate our backup camera kits to your CDR radio, our backup Camera kits will only work if you have a PCM 3.1 Radio.

PLEASE SEE PICTURES BELOW TO HELP YOU DETERMINE IF YOU HAVE A PCM 3.1 OR A CDR 31 RADIO

IF  YOU  HAVE  A  PCM  3.1  RADIO  YOU  WILL SEE  THE  "SOURCE"  BUTTON  ON  YOUR  LEFT

Picture

IF  YOU  HAVE  THE  "TP"  BUTTON  YOU  HAVE  A  CDR  31  RADIO

Picture

if  you  have  confirmed  that  you  have  a  pcm 3.1  Radio   move  to  step  # 2.

if  you  have  a  cdr  31  radio  what  can  be  done?

We have developed a kit that replaces your rearview mirror on the windshield, it installs like the original mirror on the same mount already present on the windshield, same cameras as our original kits but the imgae will display on the rearview mirror, still looks oem due to the mirror swap. In addition its also features  a dashcam, so really nice solution. We plan to launch this by the end of November 2020

step # 2  DETERMINE  IF  YOU  HAVE THE  CORRECT  SYSTEM  VERSION

Now that you confirmed that you do have a PCM 3.1 the next step is to find out if you have the correct software version. The software version must be MINIMUM 4.00 and up in other words it must start with a 4.XX if it starts with a 1, 2 or a 3 our backup camera kits will not work.

Please review the video on your right.

The early Boxster (2013 models early build) and the Carrera 991 (2012.5/2013 early Build) are most likely to have software version 3.XX

If your software version is not 4.XX and up please our Backup Camera Kits will not work.

if  you  have  confirmed  that  you  have system version  4.xx  and  up  go  to step #3

my  version  is  not  version  4  what  can  i  do?

We have developed a kit that replaces your rearview mirror on the windshield, it installs like the original mirror on the same mount already present on the windshield, same cameras as our original kits but the imgae will display on the rearview mirror, still looks oem due to the mirror swap. In addition its also features  a dashcam, so really nice solution. We plan to launch this by the end of November 2020

STEP #3  choose  your  camera  type

We have 3 types of Backup Cameras as follow

Center Mount Camera with moving guidelines  This style is the factory style camera its small and discrete and is the most popular. This camera installs above your license plate on the bumper and is centered to the car. This camera features moving guidelines. (See Further Description Below for this Camera)

Center Mount Camera with fixed guidelines or no guidelines  This style is the factory style camera its small and discrete and is the most popular. This camera installs above your license plate on the bumper and is centered to the car. This camera features fixed guidelines with the options to eliminate the guidelines if you wish not to have any guidelines. (See Further Description Below for this Camera)

License Plate Light Module Camera with Moving Guidelines. This camera  replaces the current license plate light module on the right side (Passenger) , it has a set of built-in Led Lights to light up the license plate and integrates a Backup Camera. The factory led light connector that lights up the plate at night will plug right into the camera with no modifications and your license plate lights will work just as usual. This camera features moving guidelines. (See Further Description Below for this Camera)

License Plate Light Module Camera with Fixed Guidelines. This camera features fixed guidelines. (See Further Description Below for this Camera)

License Plate Frame Camera with distance sensors This installs around your license plate, its a license plate frame, it also has distance sensors with audible sound. This is a new item and features distance sensors as well. (See Further Description Below for this Camera)

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT OUR CAMERAS WITH MOVING GUIDELINES.

Please take in consideration that the moving guidelines are achieved by the camera having a built-in sensor that senses movement therefor the accuracy is not as good as a factory system that is tied to the Canbus and relies on steering movement. The moving guidelines are pretty accurate but should not be compared to a Canbus type system. There is some lag for the guidelines to move and follow movement however they are still pretty accurate..

now  that  you  have  a  pretty  good  idea  of  what  type  of  backup  camera  you  prefer  move  to  step #4  to  determine  your  options  for  coding  the  pcm 3.1

step # 4 what  your  options  are  for  coding  the  pcm 3.1  for  our  backup  camera  kits  to  work

In order for the Backup Camera Kit to work with your PCM 3.1 you will need to code the PCM 3.1, in other words we need to tell the PCM 3.1 that we are installing a Backup Camera. Coding requires special equipment or advanced equipment. There are a couple of options.

1- The easiest by far is to rent our coding tool, there is a fee for the rental of the coding tool and a security deposit that will be returned to you once you send the coding tool back . Why is this your best option? Because it's fast and you have control over coding, some shops may be good with wrenches but are not good when it comes to coding, some shops may not have advanced scanners to do so. If you do it yourself just follow the easy to use instructions or watch the video below.

2- If you know of a independent shop that has a PIWIS Scanner or if you visit your Porsche Dealer they have a PIWIS Scanner then they can easily code the PCM 3.1 for you . A Piwis Scanner is the official scan tool for Porsche.

3- Any independent shop with an advanced scan tool such as AUTEL MAXYSIS, or any other high end scanner tool they will be able to code the PCM 3.1

To the best of my knowledge any basic scanner won't cut it, Durametric won't work either as to the feedback I got from customers.

FAQ's (Installation)

Q- How long does the installation take? (For a profesional installer such has a audio shop or automotive technician)
A- In all fairness it shouldn’t take longer than 5 hours for a profesional to install a backup camera kit depending on the model.

981 Cayman / 991 Coupe Approx 3 hrs
981 Boxster Approx 4 hrs
991 Cabriolet Approx 5 hrs

Q- Who can install it you say “Profesional”?
A- A Mechanic or Audio Shop should have the qualifications to install a backup camera kit.

Q- Do you recommend the Porsche Dealer do the installation?
A- If they are willing to do it of course but most Porsche Dealers have a different mentality with aftermarket parts for some unknown reason they like to scare the customer away with warnings and big labor rates. In addition as soon as you mention coding they tend to not like that either. Just a dealer thing.

Q- Can I install it myself?
A- Yes if you have some experience in automotive mechanics or car audio and you’re not intimidated by popping a few trims here and there and possibly removing a bumper it’s very possible and realistic for a weekend “do it yourself” to do it. If you need reassurance on every step you take to install this Backup Camera kit this might not be a job for you.

Q- Can you install the camera kit for me ?
A- Yes we can if you happen to be in south Florida it willing to drive down we can do so with pleasure . The cost of labor is $315 + Tax except for the 911 Cabriolet $420 + Tax.

Q- Is it a good idea to test the kit before going all in?
A- Yes tell your installer to test the kit by simulating the installation without removing all trims etc... just removing the PCM and hooking up the system, all the installer needs is 12V to power the camera and test it.

Q- Why do you offer 2 ways of connecting the power to the backup camera? Either to the fusebox or to the reverse light wire?
A- We always connected the power source to the fuse box however as of November 2020 after listening to customers we have offered an additional option to connect the camera to the reverse light wire signal. The only advantage we see is possibly longevity of the camera itself, since it only gets power when you hit reverse. However the downside on such connection will render the factory behavior useless, for example you won't be able to get a view of the camera while not being on reverse since it only gets power when on reverse, you also lose the function of getting the backup image until you hit 10 MPH. At the end of the day if all you want is an image when you back up then the connection to the reverse light wire may be better for you. If you want all the factory options you must connect to the fusebox.

Q- I'm having a hard time finding an installer can you help?
A- Google reviews are your best friends, usually reviews don't lie, present the idea to your chosen installer and see how they feel about installing a backup camera. There are tons of good shops out there I believe more than bad shops, ask around and I'm sure you will easily find a qualified installer.

Q- I found an installer and they are telling me it will take them 6,7 or 8 hours to install?
A- Walk away and search for an honest installer

FAQ'S (Front Camera)

Q- Is the front camera worth it?
A- Well it all depends, if your car is very low and you deal with those parking cement stoppers found in shopping malls, or any other commercial parking lots or in multi-stage indoor parking and your afraid to hit the front bumper lip maybe the front camera is a great idea. It basically allows you to prevent damage to your front bumper, that's pretty much the reason you would install one.

Q- How does it switch image?
A- When you hit the Reverse the system will prioritize the rear camera, as soon as you put it to Drive or 1st Gear  it will automatically switch to the front Camera. So if you only had the backup camera when you hit Drive or 1st Gear the PCM 3.1 will show the Backup Camera Image until you hit 10 MPH however if you have a front camera installed you will see the front image until you hit 10 MPH.

Q- What about installation?
A- Well unlike the rear where it's much easier the front can be challenging, getting passed the firewall is not the easiest due to limitations of where to fish the video cable. Plus depending on your front bumper it may be difficult to find a good location , for example on the GTS Models the bumpers have a large mouth in the center that allow you to install the camera easily, however if you have a base model with no center opening it may be a little more challenging. So we don't have instructions for the best method of fishing a wire and installing the camera upfront, a good installer will figure it out however the wiring diagram on how to connect the system is available for download below.

Q- What type of Camera do you supply for the front?
A- Same as the center mount camera for the rear except that there is no guidelines and the image is orientated for the front.

FAQ’s (Preventing costly mistakes)

Q- My installer installed the kit and it’s not working, it’s your fault , I’m mad, I will leave you a bad review. You’re an as**ole. I will beat you up . I will bash you on the forums . He charged me a lot of money.
A- The camera kits are tested at our facility and at the manufacturer prior to shipment. However anything could happen , before dismantling the whole car just have your installer test the whole camera kit before removing all trims and bumper, all that needs to be done is to pull out the PCM and install the kit by making all connections . It takes virtually 10 minutes to simulate a real installation and this can save you a bunch of time and frustration if anything should be wrong . We can’t stress this enough .

FAQ’s (Warranty) Applies to camera kit only

Q- Does the camera kit come with a warranty?
A- Yes , all parts come with a 12 Month warranty from the date of purchase. If something should fail we will replace any faulty component within that covered period.

Q- Is labor covered when a part fails and needs replacement?
A- No only the part is covered.

Q- Do I have to pay any shipping fees on a warranty replacement?
A- If you are in the USA your replacement will ship for free. If you live outside the USA you will have to pay for shipping.

FAQ’s (Coding)

WE STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU RENT OUR CODING TOOL THIS WILL SAVE YOU A BUNCH OF TIME AND SOME EXPLAINING TO INSTALLERS WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH CODING A MODULE.

WE HAVE A LIMITED AMOUNT OF CODING TOOLS, IT IS IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO RETURN THE CODING TOOL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE THIS WILL GIVE A CHANCE FOR EVERYONE TO RECEIVE A CODING TOOL IN A TIMELY MANNER AS OF THIS WRITING IF WE DON'T RECEIVE THE CODING TOOL WITHIN 2 WEEKS AFTER YOU HAVE RECEIVED IT YOU PRETTY MUCH OWN IT. WE ARE ENFORCING THIS NEW RULE AS MANY DON'T REALIZE THAT OTHERS ARE WAITING AND THEY RETURN THE CODING TOOLS SOMETIMES IN  MONTHS.

THERE MAY ALSO BE A WAITING PERIOD FOR OUR CODING TOOL , YOUR ORDER MAY TAKE UP TO 2 WEEKS TO SHIP IF YOU HAVE OPTED FOR THE CODING TOOL RENTAL. ONCE AGAIN WE HAVE A LIMITED AMOUNT OF THESE.

WARNING: WHEN CODING ANY MODULE YOU MUST BE CERTAIN THAT YOU HAVE A STRONG BATTERY ANY BATTERY FAILURE WHILE CODING CAN BE CATASTROPHIC.

Q- What is coding?
A- Coding is not programming but coding is more like telling a module that a new feature will be added in other words enabling an existing feature in a module in this case we are referring to the radio module
Called PCM3.1

Q- How do you code a module?
A- The Porsche factory scan tool allows coding any module it is capable
Do doing so however there are other high end generic scanners such as Autel Scanner , Snap On Scanner and many more high end professional scanners that can code modules. If you chose to get it installed by a professional independent shop ask them if they have a scanner that is capable of coding a Porsche Module. If you chose to get it installed by a Porsche Dealer of course they can code it.

Q- My independent shop does not have a scanner that can code a Porsche Module what do I do? My Porsche Dealer doesn’t want to help me either?
A- Rent our scanner tool you can do it in the comfort of your own home in less than 10 minutes even my teenager can do it by following the instructions. So don’t worry if you or you’re technician doesn’t want to deal with any coding just rent our coding tool.

Q- What does it cost to rent the coding tool?
A- Total net cost is $64.95 however a security deposit of $150 is required and will be refunded to you once
You return the coder tool with the included pre-paid return label and envelope (US Only). Initially it will be $214.95 but $150 will be refunded once the coder tool is returned.

Q- I live outside of the US how do I rent your coder tool?
A- The same way as anyone else however you will have to return the coding tool at your expense to us unfortunately we don’t have the ability to have return labels for international customers.

Q- If I rent your coding tool can I code it before the installation?
A- Yes absolutely once coded you can install the camera anytime. We prefer you do so as you need
To return the coding tool as soon as possible for other customers that are waiting .

Q- Why does the coding tool enable Park Assist but I don't have Park Assist?
A- The coder is programmed to code both the Backup Camera and Park Assist, however if you don't have Park Assist this will simply be there and greyed out it won't affect anything. If you have Park Assist well you have Park Assist the coding won't change anything to your current factory Park Assist functions.

FAQ’s (Guidelines)

Q- Dynamic Guidelines , Fixed Guidelines it no guidelines at all, which one do I chose?
A- Dynamic guidelines are pretty cool but the accuracy is not like a factory installed camera that relies
on steering signal, lag is to be expected which means that you may be straight and you have to wait a second or two for the guidelines to straighten out. The sensor is built into the camera and senses movement.

The fixed guidelines are the most accurate, with green, yellow and red colors when you reach red it’s time to stop backing up.

No guidelines is no guidelines pretty much just an image.

FAQ’s (Reliability and Quality)

Q- Is this a cheap product like Chinese product?
A- Of course it’s China made however we have put extensive testing in our kits made specifically for your Porsche , we sourced the best suppliers , China or not what’s important is who is behind it , you can trust Maxspeed we strive for high quality and the best product in the industry for our customers.

Of course like any other electronic product something could go wrong but the rate is very low, we have been selling these kits for a few years and failure rate is very low.

Q-You say the best products?
A-Yes take a look at a Porsche factory system on a Panamera or Cayenne and some
2016 911/Boxster/Cayman you will notice that our picture quality is way but way better like 3 folds . We give you HD imaging Porsche doesn’t .

FAQ’s (Parking Sensors)

Q- I have parking sensors what will happen?
A- If you have the front and rear sensors the parking sensor image will overlap the rear camera image you will see both just like a factory system.

FAQ’s (PCM Camera Menu)

Q- Will all the features Work on the PCM Camera menu?
A- No the ability to remove guidelines will not work, all other features will work such as brightness, contrast, disabling camera etc... will work

FAQ’s (Transmission)

Q-Will this Work with both Automatic and Manual Transmission?
A-Yes it will Work with both.

FAQ's (Porsche Warranty)

Q- I still have warranty on my car with Porsche will this void my warranty?
A- Technically Porsche can void any warranty if they suspect a system as been modified and is causing issues, however we are unaware of any malfunctions when installing our backup camera kit. We make no claims that Porsche can't void your warranty after installing an aftermarket product.

FAQ's (Liability, Responsibility, Cost of installation , Cost of replacement etc...)

Q- Should I solely rely on my backup camera?
A- No first you should get familiar with the camera to get used to distances by using the backup camera over and over, however never should you only rely on the backup camera system alone, you should always be careful and use your judgement when approaching an obstacle. We take no responsibility in any incidents or accidents that can occur by simply relying on the backup camera.

Q- Product Installation
A- We take no responsibility on the installation of this product, we do our best to give you guidelines to properly install this kit, however it is an aftermarket product and we assume no responsibility or liability after the installation, its up to you to decide id this is a product you want to install or get installed in your vehicle.

Q- Product Failure
A- If any component should fail within the 1 year warranty we will replace the faulty component, we will not cover any labor charge. If you happen to want to pass by our shop we will be happy to replace and install the faulty component free of charge to you however if that is not possible we don't cover any installation fees.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Assuming that you have tested your kit prior to full installation and that the PCM is coded.

I just installed the kit I put the car in reverse and nothing happens I see the normal radio screen , no changes at all, I don't see the observe surroundings message?

Possible causes

-Make sure the parking brake is off, the camera won’t Work if the parking brake is on.

-Go to the Camera Menu by pressing CAR/OPTIONS/SET CAR/SET PARKING make sure the Backup Camera is enabled . If you don't see the menu at all the PCM was not coded properly.

All of a sudden I put the car in reverse and nothing happens I see the normal radio screen , no changes at all, I don't see the observe surroundings message? It worked perfectly before?

Possible Causes

If you have brought in the car for service, and they have replaced some modules and happen to reprogram all the car, they most probably wiped off the coding on the PCM. You will need to re-code the PCM

I put the car in reverse I see the observe surroundings but there is a black screen no image ?

Possible causes

-Make sure the camera  gets power, verify the power cable at the fuse box or if you hooked it up to your Tail Light make sure there is power going to that cable, you can verify that with a test light or multimeter.

-If you have power, verify the connection at the rear of the car, basically the connection from the video cable to the camera , is it plugged in nice and tight. If it is make sure the yellow RCA connection behind the PCM is connected.

If you have power to the camera this may be a sign of a bad camera.

My camera image is shaky or distorted or has these funny colors or lines.

Possible Causes

Verify that the yellow rca connection from the video cable to the pcm harness is properly seated , make sure the connection to the rear of the camera is solid. Make sure the power cable (Fusebox or Backup Light Signal) is connected properly. If all turns out good this can be caused by a variety of issues, its best you contact us for further diagnostic.
